In trials in 1967-71 on leached calcareous forest soil with winter wheat and maize each given 120 kg P2O5 + 120 kg K2O/ha at sowing, application of 90-100 kg N/ha at sowing and 20-30 kg N/ha as 5.4% urea solution at the flowering stage in wheat and at the tasselling stage in maize increased grain protein contents by 0.7-0.8 unit % in wheat and grain yields by 150-200 kg/ha and grain protein content by 0.9 unit % in maize, compared with application of the full N rate at sowing.
