Effectiveness of use of Santoquin at different levels of vitamin A in cow rations

6 matched groups of 15-18 Russian Simmental cows (previous lactation milk yield, approx. 3000 kg) initially in the 7th-8th months of pregnancy received common rations as follows: (i) with no additions, (ii) with Santoquin (ethoxyquin) at 1.3 g daily/cow during pregnancy and at 1.7 g during lactation, (iii) with 75 000 IU vitamin A daily/cow during pregnancy and 145 000 IU during lactation, (iv) with ethoxyquin as for (ii) and vitamin A as for (iii), (v) with 140 000 IU vitamin A during pregnancy and 225 000 IU during lactation, and (vi) with ethoxyquin as for (ii) and vitamin A as for (v). The carotene supplied by rations (i) and (ii) was 200 mg daily/cow during pregnancy and 240 mg during lactation. Carotene content of the milk determined 15-30 days after calving was resp. (i) 24.8, (ii) 40.9, (iii) 27.8, (iv) 35.4, (v) 35.8 and (vi) 41.4 mu g%; and vitamin A content was correspondingly 26.2, 31.5, 40.9, 46.8, 49.5 and 51.8 mu g%. Blood composition data are also presented. Mean daily milk yields and fat contents for the 1st 90 days of lactation were resp. (kg and %): 11.8 and 3.53, 12.3 and 3.53, 12.3 and 3.54, 12.7 and 3.65, 12.7 and 3.59, and 13.3 and 3.71. It is calculated that for an expenditure on ethoxyquin of 2.98 r/cow, 10.5-18.9 r/cow were gained in extra milk.
