Effects of shade on stand and sod quality of selected turf and forage grasses

In plot trials in 1969, Bermuda grass Tifgreen, Zoysia sp. Emerald, Kentucky bluegrass, red fescue Pennlawn, cocksfoot Boone and tall fescue Kentucky 31 were grown under plastic open mesh cloths providing 30, 50 or 70% shade or in full spring and summer sunlight. Zoysia was more tolerant of shade, but Bermuda grass showed optimum growth in full sunlight. In 70% shade, Bermuda grass showed stand failure.
