A diet of maize starch, maize oil, cellulose, salt, vitamins and all necessary amino acids in crystalline form except for the sulphur-containing ones was supplemented at the expense of starch with D-, L-, or DL-methionine with and without L-cystine. The amounts of added methionine were such that growth would lie on the linear portion of the growth curve. All diets provided 14.9% protein equivalent and ME 4200 kcal/kg.
