During 4 years 59 patients were treated with an elemental diet (Vivasorb (R) ) for 1 to 6 weeks; most had chronic inflammatory bowel disease. The indication for treatment was insufficient remission on prednisone 10 to 60 mg daily for 1 to 4 weeks or no remission after 60 to 120 mg for 1 to 4 weeks. Remission was obtained in 14 patients on elemental diet and a constant or decreasing dose of prednisone and in another 6 on elemental diet and a high dose of prednisone.
