Experiments on oestrus synchronisation in heifers using a prostaglandin analogue (preliminary report)

20 Danish Black Pied (herd A) and 32 crossbred (herd B) heifers, aged 12-23 mth, were treated with 25 mg PGF2 alpha. 15 and 20 of the heifers in herds A and B resp. had a functional corpus luteum at the time of treatment, and of these heifers, 94% exhibited signs of oestrus 48-96 h after treatment v none of the 17 heifers without a functional corpus luteum at the time of treatment. 11 days after PGF2 alpha treatment, 42 heifers with a functional corpus luteum at the time of treatment (17 in herd A and 25 in herd B) were injected with 4 mg of the prostaglandin analogue A594. Although only 35 females exhibited strong signs of oestrus, all females were inseminated twice, 72 and 96 h following the last injection. Gynaecological examination 21 days after insemination revealed that 31 of the heifers had a functional corpus luteum, and 14 heifers were pregnant.
