In field trials silage maize was irrigated twice, given 100, 200 or 300 kg N/ha and grown at 3-13.28 plants/m2 and grain was grown with or without irrigation, given the same rates of N and grown at 3-9.45 plants/m2. In silage maize, DM yield increased with plant density and with increasing rate of applied N to 25.8 t/ha at the highest density and N rate.
