Exposure of white mice to Baculovirus amsacta of groundnut red-hairy caterpillar, Amsacta albistriga (Walker)

Owing to the recent interest in the use of a nuclear polyhedrosis virus (Baculovirus amsacta) as a possible biological control agent against Amsacta albistriga (Wlk.), it was tested for toxicity to mammals in the laboratory at Madurai in the Indian State of Tamil Nadu, by exposing white mice to oral injection of a suspension of the virus at a dose over 100 times as great as the average field dose used against A. albistriga; the suspension was found to contain bacterial spores and cells (but no coliform cells) as well as the polyhedral inclusion bodies of the virus. No differences were observed between treated and untreated mice in behaviour, appearance or feeding activity during life or in the organs of blood during dissection. It is concluded that this virus is not pathogenic or toxic to mammals.
