Four-year control experiments against the oriental peach moth (Grapholitha molesta Busck.) and the lesser peach-tree borer (Anarsia lineatella Zell.) with the help of pheromone traps (Orfamone and Anamone)

Four-year control experiments against the oriental peach moth (Grapholitha molesta Busck.) and the lesser peach-tree borer (Anarsia lineatella Zell.) with the help of pheromone traps (Orfamone and Anamone)

Informatore Fitopatologico 27(6/7): 77-79

An account is given of experiments in 1973-76 in peach orchards in the Milan district of Italy in which 2 types of pheromone trap containing Orfamone ((Z)-8-dodecenyl acetate), the synthetic analogue of the sex pheromone of Cydia molesta (Busck) (Grapholita molesta), and Anamone (a mixture of trans-7-decenyl acetate and trans-5-decen-1-ol), the synthetic sex pheromone of Anarsia lineatella Zell., were used to determine the populations of these moths present and the number of insecticide treatments required. Details of the trapping results on trees treated or not treated with a wettable-powder spray containing 25% azinphos-methyl, together with the meteorological conditions at the time, are shown for each year. It was concluded that the relatively high numbers of males of both species caught, and the number of peach shoots infested with larvae that were observed, required regular applications of insecticide from the first appearance of individuals of the first generation until shortly before harvest; these were needed on peach of every variety and especially on medium-ripening and late-ripening varieties.
