Genetic improvement of meat sheep. 4. Effect of age of dam on productivity of Dorset and Border Leicester sheep

Genetic improvement of meat sheep. 4. Effect of age of dam on productivity of Dorset and Border Leicester sheep

Australian Journal of Experimental Agriculture and Animal Husbandry 17(88): 735-740

The effect of age of dam on the number of lambs born and weaned and the weight of lambs weaned per ewe lambing and on the number of lambs weaned/lamb born and lamb weaning weight was estimated for Dorset and Border Leicester sheep. In both breeds, the number of lambs born, number weaned and weight of lambs weaned showed a clear association with age of dam, rising to a peak at 5 yr of age in Dorsets and 4-6 yr in Border Leicesters.
