Heat and conception rate after synchronisation of oestrus with cloprostenol

52 heifers on a low nutritional plane and 156 heifers on a high nutritional plane were given an injection of 2 ml cloprostenol (analogue of PGF2 alpha ) or 2 injections 11 days apart, and were inseminated either at the observed oestrus or 72 + 96 h after the last treatment. 58 and 146 untreated controls were kept on low and high planes of nutrition resp. The intensity of oestrus was assessed 72 and 96 h after the last treatment, and the heifers were placed in categories according to the degree of contraction of the uterine horns, type or location of cervical mucus, and penetrability of the cervix: (1) strong contraction, cervical mucus forming a cord, and cervix easily penetrable; (2) moderate contraction, mucus in the vagina only, and the cervix open; (3) slight contraction, cervical mucus absent, and cervix partly open. Of the 52 treated heifers on the low plane of nutrition, 48 were inseminated 72 and 96 h after treatment; 26 showed oestrus of type 1 and the rest showed types 2 or 3. Four heifers did not respond to treatment. The CR of the inseminated heifers was 41.7%; that of the inseminated heifers showing type-1 oestrus was 61.5%. Of the 58 controls on the low plane of nutrition, 63.8% showed oestrus within a 25-day observation period, and 19 of them conceived. Of the 156 treated heifers on the high plane of nutrition, 6 failed to show oestrus; among the rest, 103, 39 and 8 showed oestrus of types 1, 2 and 3 resp. The CR for heifers showing type-1 and type-2 oestrus was 72.8 and 50% resp. Of the 146 control heifers on the high plane of nutrition, the percentage inseminated was 73.3; of these, 72% conceived to 1st insemination.
