Histochemical observation of decayed cell wall using ultraviolet and fluorescence microscopy

Reports microscopic studies on thin sections of the wood of Picea jezoensis and Fagus crenata decayed by cultures of (a) white rot (Coriolus versicolor), (b) brown rot (Coriolellus palustris), and (c) soft rot (Chaetomium globosum) fungi, or by (d) humus soil. Fungal attack did not decrease the lignin content (as shown by u.v. absorption) but caused a red fluorescence of cell walls after staining with acridine orange.
