Histochemical observations on enzymatic activities of fertile and male sterile sugar beet anthers

Histochemical observations on enzymatic activities of fertile and male sterile sugar beet anthers

Proceedings of the Sugar Beet Research Association (16): 89-94

The benzidine method for peroxidase activity and the tetrazolium salt method for succinic dehydrogenase activity were used to examine the enzyme activities in developing anthers of fertile and male-sterile sugar beet plants. Peroxidase activity was observed in the endothecium and middle layer and the colour intensity given by the reactions increased as the anther developed in both fertile and male-sterile plants.
