Histochemical studies on the development of skeletal muscle of piglets in the neonatal period

The fibre type development of piglet musculature in the first 21 days of life was studied by histochemical methods. On the first day after birth two fibre types (type I and type II) were detected by the use of the ATP-ase reaction and the alpha -GDH reaction. After acid pre-incubation sub-type II C was also detected at this stage by ATP-ase. On the sixth day of life the phosphorylase reaction also allowed differentiation of the two types. On the ninth day the ATP-ase reaction (including acid pre-incubation) showed four different fibre types (Type I; type II A, IIB and II C). Whereas at one day old all the fibres showed the presence of fat in fine droplet distribution, with increasing age a concentration of the fat droplets in type I and type II A fibres was found.
