Histopathological changes in the thymus of the white mouse after infection with Toxoplasma gondii

Histopathological changes in the thymus of the white mouse after infection with Toxoplasma gondii

Zeitschrift für Parasitenkunde 49(2): 113-125

The number of lymphocytes in the thymus gland cortex of mice started to decrease three days after infection with a virulent strain of T. gondii, and at the death of the animal seven days after infection the thymus cortex contained no lymphocytes. Electron microscopy showed destruction of most of the reticulum cells and lymphocytes. In cells which were still alive multiplication of Toxoplasma trophozoites was to be seen and many parasites occurred in the remains of destroyed thymus cells.
