Hive temperature as an indicator of disturbance

Hive temperature as an indicator of disturbance

Zeitschrift fur Angewandte Entomologie 78: 150-159

Automatic registration of temperature and humidity in 3 colonies during spring and summer showed a rise in temperature when there was thunder and lightning, or mechanical stimulation (noise or banging the hive). The temperature dropped when the bees were calmed with 0.5 ml of 3% aqueous phenol, or with smoke or carbon dioxide. The brood-nest temperature was more stable than that of the rest of the hive. Many examples of the traces are given.P.
