In the 1st of 2 trials, 131 castrated male calves received (a) an implant of 200 mg progesterone + 20 mg oestradiol or 2 such implants at an interval of 61 days, or (b) a single implant of 200 mg testosterone + 20 mg oestradiol, or (c) were untreated (controls). 78 female calves received either 1 or 2 implants of progesterone + oestradiol. The experiment was repeated in the following year.
