Hormonal induction of lactogenesis in bull calves

Hormonal induction of lactogenesis in bull calves

Proceedings of the Australian Society of Animal Production 11: 33P

The ability to breed a cow with known milk protein genetic variants is hampered by the fact that the milk protein genes transmitted by a sire can only be inferred by the genotypes of his daughters. Milk secretion in small quantities was induced in bull calves, aged 3 and 6 mth, after 6 wk of treatment with alternating 4-day courses of oestrogen and progesterone. A shorter treatment of 2 wk with daily doses of oestrogen and progesterone failed to produce milk.
