Improvement of turf quality and reduction of sulphur dioxide damage to turf grasses by the use of growth retardants

Foliar sprays of chlormequat at 1000 and 2000 p.p.m. and ethephon at 500 and 1000 p.p.m. were applied to Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis Merion), bent grass (Agrostis stolonifera Seaside) and Bermuda grass (Cynodon dactylon U-3). Both compounds reduced plant height, length of leaf blades and internode length and improved turf quality compared with the control. Ethephon was the more effective in reducing height of bent grass and Bermuda grass.
