Mean in vitro digestibility in four Phleum pratense varieties decreased from Clair (the earliest flowering) to Bounty (the latest) and decreased also from head emergence to full heading. Using the same varieties, sheep had a higher ad libitum intake from the later varieties than from early ones from each of two cuts. Dry-matter digestibility and energy and crude-protein contents were lower in later varieties in the first cut and higher in the second.
