When the effect of eutrophication on the level of attack by Hyalopterus pruni (Geoffr.) on reeds (Phragmites communis) was investigated at two sites in Berlin, a correlation was found between the quantity of available nitrogen, the ash content of the reeds, the leaf area, the leaf colour and the degree of infestation. However, it is pointed out that other factors, such as the microclimate of the reed-bed, have also to be considered. Plants at the site with the higher degree of eutrophication showed, in addition to a heavier attack by H. pruni, a high ash content, a large leaf area and a greyish-green leaf colour.
