Abstract
The mycelium of this str. of T. matsutake, which is rather rare in Tsuga stands, inhabits mineral soil layers poor in organic matter. Mycorrhizae formed on the young fine roots of T. sieboldii in witches' brooms or elongated pinnate shapes somewhat parasitic in character and lacking the fungal sheath and Hartig net. Most soil fungi were excluded but Mortierella sp. predominated in the Shiro soil.
