An experiment was carried out to compare 2 types of automatic cleaning systems: (i) reverse-flow cleaning in which a centrifugal pump forces cleaning fluids into the receiving can and out through the teatcups; and (ii) recirculation cleaning in which the vacuum pump of the milking machine is used to suck cleaning fluids through the plant under vacuum. Each of 12 farmers used one of these systems for 6 wk and then used buckets for another 6 wk.
