A total of 664 accessions of O. glaberrima from ten countries of West Africa were studied morphologically. Grain length and width and growth period had low coefficients of variation; culm and panicle length were also uniform. Nearly all of 187 African rices were resistant to Nephotettix virescens. All of 189 strains from Liberia were resistant to local races of Pyricularia oryzae. Two strains of O. glaberrima were moderately resistant to Xanthomonas oryzicola.
