The characteristics of the cropping system in Okinawa are compared with those of Hawaii, Taiwan, Java and India; the system used at present in Okinawa and Hawaii is sugar cane monoculture and that used in Taiwan, Java and India involves rotation of sugar cane with other crops. Reasons why systems used successfully in other countries are not suitable for Okinawa are tabulated and a mid-term rotation system combined with beef cattle in a 6-year rotation is recommended for Okinawa.
