Birthweight, birth order and mortality were recorded for 44 litters of Large White, Hampshire and crossbred sows and gilts. The newborn pig walks within minutes of birth and seeks with its nose for a teat on any vertical surface it may encounter. When a teat is found it is sucked and the pig then remains oriented to the udder but tries out a number of teats.
