It has been found that drying out of lily bulbs after lifting leads to need for a longer forcing time, uneven flowering and fewer flowers/stem. With the normal method of freezing-storage, too much drying out occurred prior to freezing and the weight loss during the 8-week pre-treatment at 1 deg C was 8%. With the proposed new method the bulbs are packed in thick, perforated plastic bags without filler immediately after lifting and there is practically no weight loss.
