Occurrence and pathogenic significance of Clostridium perfringens in the calf. II. Infection studies, ligature test and proof of enterotoxin formation to explain the pathogenic significance of Clostridium perfringens Type A

Occurrence and pathogenic significance of Clostridium perfringens in the calf. II. Infection studies, ligature test and proof of enterotoxin formation to explain the pathogenic significance of Clostridium perfringens Type A

Zentralblatt fur Veterinarmedizin 24B(3): 183-197

After oral and intra-jejunal applications of C. perfringers type A cultures, no clinical symptoms were observed in healthy calves not given colostrum, nor was there any evidence of the establishment and proliferation of the organism in the intestinal canal. In the course of a spontaneous infection with E. coli O78, intrajejunal application of C. perfringens type A was followed by enterotoxaemia. In a rabbit ligature test 8 of 63 strains produced an accumulation of fluid.
