In field trials in 1971-4, 112 perennial ryegrass cultivars and 4 hybrid ryegrass cultivars were compared for winter survival and spring vigour. Survival during the 1st winter ranged from 100% in Taptoe and Endura to 20% in some cultivars and was less in hybrid ryegrass than in perennial ryegrass cultivars. There was a broad correlation between Jan. temperature at the place of origin of the cultivar and survival at Sapporo.
