During ovipositor dragging following egg laying in sour cherries, females of Rhagoletis fausta (O.-S.) were found to deposit on the fruit surface an unidentified pheromone deterring repeated oviposition attempts by R. fausta in that fruit. The marking pheromone proved to be water soluble but, if kept dry, remained highly effective as an oviposition deterrent for at least 216 h (the duration of the experiment).
