Proteinase from Entamoeba histolytica partially purified by ion exchange and gel filtration chromatography hydrolyses haemoglobulin more rapidly than it does human serum albumin. For both substrates the optimum pH was 3.5 and for azocasein it was 6.0. Hydrolysis of azocasein was distinctly more susceptible to inhibition, particularly by thiol-blocking compounds, and was activated by cysteine and dithiothreitol.
