Participation of rural workers' organizations in the development of agriculture and rural life in Latin America

Participation of rural workers' organizations in the development of agriculture and rural life in Latin America

Land Reform, Land Settlement and Cooperatives (2): 55-68

Various classifications of rural workers are compared and contrasted (FAO, CIDA, etc.), both to arrive at some definition of 'rural workers' and some estimate of their total number. Approximately 33 million work on the land (in 17 countries of Latin America), 18 million self-employed, 15 million hired labour. Only about 4.6% of the total are affiliated to any organizations; the percentage of sub-family and wage earning land-workers may be increasing, but is still very low.
