A total of 204 cultivars of Pennisetum typhoides, comprising a group of Indian varieties, a group of Indian inbred lines, a group of African varieties and a group of American inbred lines, were analysed. Results are tabulated separately for the four groups. Overall, grain size had the greatest direct effect on grain yield but in the Indian varieties and inbreds, tiller number was of most importance. Grain density had an important indirect effect via grain size.
