A total of 159 calvings and 141 lactations were studied for Friesian (F) and Brown Swiss (BS) cows imported from Holland and Austria respectively. Milk yield during the 1st 5 lactations averaged respectively 4205, 4496, 4827, 4970 and 4355 kg for F and 3163, 3466, 4043, 4058 and 4043 kg for BS. There was no significant difference in milk fat content between the 2 breeds (range 2.59-3.45% in 1st 5 lactations). Lactation length was also similar in both breeds.
