The different concepts used to designate application rates of chemical pesticides (including insecticides) are discussed. It is considered necessary that all application rates should be expressed in terms of active ingredient/ha, since the possibility of confusion with regard to quantities expressed in other ways has increased in recent years by the extension of the use of low-volume and ultra-low-volume sprays.
