In 3 field trials in 1966-9 and 1972-3, 72 populations of sulla from Italy and 5 from other countries were grown in spaced or dense plantings. DM production was highest in some central Italian ecotypes but in trials with 15 populations only that from Foce Ombrone outyielded cv. Grimaldi which gave 14.4 t DM/ha in 1968-9. Herbage production was highest in Grimaldi at 24.4 t/ha in 1968, but in 1969 Grimaldi gave 68.1 t and ecotypes from Ascolana and Panicale gave 68.4 and 68.9 t, respectively. In trials with all ecotypes in 1972-3, fresh weight/plant was 2.47 kg and 1.57 kg in Grimaldi in 1972 and 1973, respectively and it was outyielded by a collection from S. Angelo in Colle in 1972 which gave 2.89 kg and a collection from Montecarotto in 1973 which gave 1.74 kg. Some ecotypes from N. Italy showed the greatest cold resistance and the latest flowering date.
