Phenylalanine-ammonia lyase (PAL) and synthesis of catechins in the tea plant

Phenylalanine-ammonia lyase (PAL) and synthesis of catechins in the tea plant

Fiziologiya Rastenii 24(4): 803-809

ISSN/ISBN: 0038-5719

Maximal PAL activity was observed in the roots of 30-day-old etiolated tea seedlings; at this age PAL activity was almost 3 times lower and the content of flavans 5 times higher in the aerial parts than in the roots. At 45 days PAL activity in the roots decreased but in the aerial parts it increased 2.5 times and leucoanthocyanins, which had predominated, were replaced by catechins. No correlation between flavan content and PAL activity was observed.
