Thecla echion (L.) and Baris sp. are among the most injurious insect pests of pineapple in Venezuela and are thought to be responsible for the exudation of a gum-like substance from the fruits. In preliminary tests on their control in Yaracuy State, the best results were obtained with sprays containing carbaryl or metalkamate (Bux), followed in order of decreasing effectiveness by sprays containing trichlorphon, diazinon or malathion.
