Presence in France of wheat spindle streak mosaic virus

Presence in France of wheat spindle streak mosaic virus

Annales de Phytopathologie 9: 377-379

A mosaic disease appearing as yellow spindle-shaped streaks on young wheat leaves in S. France is described. Infected plants appeared in patches in fields. Fairly heavy losses were caused. Filamentous particles (up to 2000 nm) and pinwheel type inclusions were found in infected sap. Symptoms in growth chambers appeared only below 15 deg C. The virus was transmissible mechanically and soilborne. Susceptibility of soft and durum wheat cvs. varied.
