Mean levels and SD of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) as Arochlor 1254, p,p'-DDE and p,p'-DDT residues in whole milk from 6 lactating mothers from New Brunswick were respectively (ppm) 0.022 plus or minus 0.007, 0.035 plus or minus 0.018 and 0.013 plus or minus 0.009. Corresponding values in milk from 9 women from Nova Scotia were 0.018 plus or minus 0.007, 0.019 plus or minus 0.010 and 0.006 plus or minus 0.002 ppm. The higher values in New Brunswick were possibly due to wider use of insecticide sprays. However, the limited number of samples prevent the establishment of a significant difference between the 2 areas. Only trace quantities of p,p'-DDT and p,p'-DDE (<0.003 mu g/g wet wt.) were detectable in several commercial infant formulae, and in none was PCB as Arochlor 1254 detected; however, PCB whose GLC pattern resembled that of the Arochlor 1242 type was detected at a level of 0.088 ppm in the whole (undiluted) formulae (mean of 5 samples).
