In Mexico, Simulium ochraceum Wlk. is probably the main vector of onchocerciasis, but S. callidum (D. & S.) and S. metallicum Bellardi are also suspected to be vectors. There are 3 foci of the disease in high rainfall areas (up to 230 in. rain/year) on nearly inaccessible mountain slopes. Other man-biting species, such as S. gonzalezi Vargas & Diaz Najera and S. haematopotum Mall., may outnumber the vector species in numbers biting.
