Properties of spent sulphite liquor treated hard maple

The strength properties (MOE, MOR and toughness) of hard maple (Acer saccharum) that had been coloured by treatment with 4 concentrations of spent sulphite liquor (SSL) in combination with heating were compared with those of untreated samples. The values for the 3 strength properties were greatest for untreated wood and declined with increasing SSL concn., due to acid hydrolysis. Only in the case of toughness did values fall below those recommended in the US Forest Service Wood Handbook.
