Homogenates of etiolated wheat leaves contained increased levels of acidic GA-like substances following treatment with red light. Differential centrifugation of homogenates indicated that the response was confined to the 1000-g (plastid) fraction. Irradiation of suspensions of intact etioplasts also increased the level of extractable GA-like activity. Phytochrome could be detected spectrophotometrically in preparations of etioplasts.
