The development of symptoms was studied with respect to the change of polyphenol oxidase (PPO) and peroxidase (PO) activity in the clover clones Ky36, Ky71-8 and Ky13 which carry genes for mottling, systemic necrosis and hypersensitive necrosis, respectively, when infected with isolate 204-1 of bean yellow mosaic virus. The inoculated leaves of Ky36 showed a steady decrease in PPO activity, whereas PO content increased continuously for four days following infection.
