Forty-one field trials were conducted over a 3-year period on 9 soil types located in various parts of the country. A wide range of rates were applied in oats and soybeans and soil samples were collected at the end of cropping season for bioassay of herbicide residues in the glasshouse. Application rates of 0.25 to 1 kg/ha of atrazine did not persist in phytotoxic amounts; at 2 kg/ha, residues present in the top 10 cm of soil caused a reduction in the growth of turnips in only a few trials.
