Resistance in eggplant, Solanum melongena L., and nontuber-bearing Solanum species to carmine spider mite

The Agricultural Research Service collection of 345 accessions of S. melongena and 12 accessions of related Solanum species were screened for resistance to Tetranychus cinnabarinus. Tolerance of damage by mite feeding was found in S. melongena 'PI269663' and 'PI29660'. Antibiosis was found in S. mammosum 'PI245968', S. sisymbrifolium 'PI337597' and S. pseudocapsicum 'PI368425'. The accessions PI245968 and PI337597 bore glandular hairs on the leaves, which trapped the mites.
