Resistance of maize to field infestation by Sitophilus zeamais Motschulsky and Sitotroga cerealella (Olivier)

Resistance of maize to field infestation by Sitophilus zeamais Motschulsky and Sitotroga cerealella (Olivier)

Queensland Journal of Agricultural and Animal Sciences recd 1978; 33(2): 155-159

The levels of infestation at harvest and of subsequent damage by Sitophilus zeamais Motsch. and Sitotroga cerealella (Ol.) are given for 20 early and 18 late varieties of maize grown in plots near Kingaroy, Queensland, in 1972-73. A number of the current commercial varieties were more susceptible to infestation than some experimental varieties, and it is suggested that because of the increasing difficulties in managing maize storage pests, further attention should be paid to plant resistance.
