Resistance to N-nitroso-N-methylurea in cytoplasmic chlorophyll mutants of sunflower induced by this mutagen

Resistance to the mutagen was judged by the frequency of structural chromosome rearrangements induced. This was greatest with treatment of the seeds at 25 deg C under aerobic conditions; with treatment under anaerobic conditions or at 7-14 deg C under aerobic conditions, almost no rearrangements were induced. The nonnuclear mutants tested had a lower frequency of rearrangements (2.2-2.9%) after treatment with a concentration of 0.04% than the line from which they were obtained (6%).
