The following characters were compared between SO2-resistant (R) and non-resistant (N) clones the relationship between needle discoloration and the amount of S absorbed after SO2-gassing; the pH and buffer capacity of needles with and without gassing treatment; the distribution of S among different cell fractions, and among shoots in different parts of the plant; and the ratio of organic S/total S, and the contents of -SH groups, protein and chlorophyll in the needles.
