Resistance to desiccation of the plant-parasitic nematode Scutellonema cavenessi Sher. 1963 in the Sahel zone

Resistance to desiccation of the plant-parasitic nematode Scutellonema cavenessi Sher. 1963 in the Sahel zone

Cahiers ORSTOM, Serie Biologie, nematologie 10(3): 283-292

Examination of soil samples taken monthly during the dry season in the Sahel zone of Senegal revealed that Scutellonema cavenessi can survive for as long as 8 months in barren soil of moisture content as low as 1%. The time taken for reactivation of the desiccated worms was related to the soil moisture content and the time of year they were extracted. Recovery in hypertonic solutions showed that the nematodes survive in a dehydrated and plasmolysed form.
